Description
Jarrod’s Raw Linseed Oil: A Natural Wood Nourisher
Jarrod’s Raw linseed oil is a natural product extracted from flax seeds. It’s particularly useful for restoring the natural sheen of wood that has been weathered or exposed to the elements.
- Natural and Additive-Free: Contains no artificial ingredients or preservatives.
- Wood Restoration: Replaces natural oils lost due to weathering, restoring the wood’s original luster.
- Slow Drying: Takes weeks to fully cure, making it suitable for indoor or outdoor use where drying time is not a concern.
Ideal Applications
- Indoor Use: Wood gutters, chopping blocks, and sawhorses.
- Outdoor Use: Unpolished wooden surfaces exposed to the elements.
Note: Due to its slow drying time, raw linseed oil may not be the best choice for surfaces that need quick protection or a glossy finish.
Applying Raw Linseed Oil: A Step-by-Step Guide
Preparation
- Clean Surface: Ensure the wood surface is clean, dry, and free of any previous finishes.
- Remove Previous Finish: If necessary, strip away any existing finishes using a suitable stripper.
- Dilute (Optional): For easier penetration, consider diluting the first few coats with turpentine or a similar solvent (up to 30%). Alternatively, warm the linseed oil by placing it in a container surrounded by hot water.
Application
- Rub In: Apply the oil using a lint-free cotton cloth, rubbing it well into the wood.
- Wipe Excess: After 20-30 minutes, wipe off any excess oil with a clean, lint-free cloth.
- Repeat: Apply additional coats at intervals of a few days, allowing each coat to cure completely before applying the next.
- Final Coat: Apply a final coat of undiluted linseed oil, wiping off any excess.
- Dry: Allow the final coat to harden for several days before using the surface.
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Wipe the surface with a damp cloth and buff dry.
- Re-Oiling: Re-apply linseed oil as needed, depending on usage and wear.
Important Notes
- Color: Linseed oil will bring out the natural colors of the wood.
- Testing: Always test the oil on a spare surface or inconspicuous area to check for color compatibility and desired results.
- Minimum Coats: A minimum of three coats is recommended for optimal protection and finish.
- Steel Wool: Light rubbing with ultra-fine steel wool (grade 0000) between coats can improve the finish.
By following these steps, you can effectively apply raw linseed oil to your wooden surfaces and enjoy its natural protective and aesthetic benefits.
